Response to 'Raisin in the Sun"

'Raisin in the Sun' is a great play that teaches many lessons throughout the storyline. I have seen the newer version of the movie, and I also read this play in high school! I read it over again and it was really awesome to pick up on some parts that didn't really stand out the first time.

This play is amazing, and shows you so many things that went on back in that day and age. I am really glad that we read and watched this in high school, and that we got to re read it now in college because I can pick out a lot more.

When the family gets the check they are all so happy and hopeful that this will turn into something good. I love that they are so joyful in this moment, but I also can't imagine how Mama is feeling in this moment as she could be very sad about her husbands death. As soon as Walter brings up the liquor store you can tell that everyone but him thinks it is a bad idea. He still pushed ahead and followed his dream to own that store.

As the play goes on it shows the struggles of the family as a whole, and also the struggles of the individuals too. Beneatha is probably my favorite character in this play. She is so down to earth but very driven at the same time which reminds me of myself at times. She is working towards being a doctor, and is attending college unlike any of the other Youngers'. I just think that she stands out, and that is what makes me like her a lot.

Overall, 'Raisin in the Sun' is a great play for all ages, and I really am happy we got to discuss it in class. I am excited to read Clybourne Park because it is kind of supposed to be a sequel to this play! I think that this play teaches that even when you think you don't have it all your happiness could be right in front of you the whole time.

  1. I enjoyed your description on the play! That is awesome you got to read the play in high school so you had a background for what was to come. I agree with your description on Beneatha she is a extremely hard working lady who can be a great example!
